Voice Modems

Why choosing voice modems?

There are many kinds of modems all over the world. Many people know that modem is mainly used for internet connection, but few one know that it can get caller ID, dial or answer a call, play or record voice, send or receive fax, gather digits pressed on the phone. It is very cheap, but different modems may have different capability on voice feature. Thus, you need select an appropriate type of modem. As voice modem is much cheaper than voice boards, it is a good selection for simple solution. As we've tested, good modems work as well as voice boards, and even do more. Voice Modem support both voice and fax. Some modems have speakerphone function which is very useful. We've used voice modems widely in many professional solution.

What type of modems are recommanded?

Conexant/Rockwell chips
rockwell 6764-61 chipset(External)

It has good capablities on Dial, Answer, Drop, Transfer, Ring/CallerID/Disconnect tone/Digit/fax tone/detection, Voice Play/Record, Fax send/Receive, Speakerphone/Mic (Volume adjustable).
The capabilities of modem is not only determined by the chipset, but also by the manufactor.
We offer this type of modems. For details, please click here

Conexant 6793-11, 6793-17, 11242-11, 11252-11.(Internal)

Intel 5628 chip(Internal)
We've used Intel 5628 internal modem, it works well, and it support CallerID, Wave Play/ Record, Digits detection, but it can not detect the disconnection of the call.

Zoom voice
modems:
It can get caller ID. Two model 3049C and PCI3025C are especially good. You should use the updated driver available from zoom technical support (some modems were shipped with defective inf files). But it has a long delay on the DTMF detection.

You can get the modems from www.zoom.com

MT5656ZDX External Modem

It has the following features:
a.Detects remote hang-up
b.Reports Caller-ID
c. Built in speaker
d.Headset / Microphone jacks

You can get the modems from http://www.multitech.com/PRODUCTS/MultiModemZDX/

Jaton voice modems:
The WinComm (Intel 536EP chip) VoiceAngel1.92 PCI and Jaton Communicator V90 internal 56K works are recommanded.

Swann voice modems work well.

Creative and Broadxent voice modems. These are very popular voice modems and we have many and mixed reports. It does seem the more recent modems do work well since Creative overcame problems with Windows XP. Model PCID15633 has a DTMF tone detection delay problem. Default flash-hook duration time can not be changed.

Pragmatic/Lectron .

How to judge if your modem is a voice modem?

Refer to the modem documentation to see if it is a voice modem. If you are still in doubt
, please open the Device Manager and check if there is a modem wave device among the Sound Device List.

It is essential that your voice modem has 100% TAPI compliant drivers (including wave drivers). It is not enough that the software provided by your modem manufacturer (or other software) works, because it might connect directly to the modem and bypass the driver files.

You must also check that you have installed the voice modem driver for the modem. Sometimes Windows Plug & Play selects the driver on the non-voice equivalent modem when installing.

Voice Modem Driver Installation - Remove unneeded/old modem drivers

If you have upgraded your modem or installed additional modems without removing the unneeded drivers, Windows TAPI drivers might fail. If that is the case, the only solution is to uninstall all modems, and then reinstall your single modem.

It is also important that when you install your drivers the software (eg IVM or DialDictate) must not be running.

Voice Modem Driver Installation - Wave drivers not correctly installed

Often the wave drivers have not been installed. Go to the Windows Control Panel double click on the Multimedia and pull down the "Audio - Sound Playback" list. Your voice modem should be listed. If it is not listed then voice modem wave drivers have not been installed.

Voice Modem Driver Updates

Some modems are distributed with the drivers supplied on the CD-ROM being only for the non-voice modem version or are otherwise defective. Some manufacturers have fixed this problem with updated drivers that you can download from their websites. If your modem is not working with IVM, check your modem manufacturer's website for an updated modem and wave driver.

There are update drivers for Zoom Voice Modems, USR (US Robotics) modems, Maestro Modems and many more. Visit the manufacturer's website to download the updated driver.

USR (US Robotics) Modems: Updated drivers may be required for USR modems to function correctly. Download from www.usr.com.

Voice Modem Plug & Play Problems

Sometimes when a modem is first installed, plug & play detects and installs the drivers for the non-voice modem equivalent. The solution to this is to uninstall your modem (you must to this), restart your computer then when plug and play detects your modem again, manually select the modem (instead of using the automatic driver selection feature of plug and play).

Caller ID Requirements

If you want caller ID/Name display, you must purchase a modem that supports CID. Check the documentation of your modem.

Check the modem documentation specifies that it supports caller ID in your country because there are different CID systems in different parts of the world. For example, very few modems support CID in the UK because the UK uses a different CID system to the rest of the world (we have an unconfirmed customer report that the Optima 56K EXT Business Modem 08-03157-A supports CID in the UK).

Modems based on the Conexant chipset are the best with CID.

In order to have CID, your telephone company must support it. With some telephone companies or contracts you need to contact them to ask them to turn caller id display on.

It would appear that many modems detect CID but do not pass the information onto TAPI . It is not sufficient that CID is being reported to the software that comes with the modem. If it is not being reported to the our softwares then it means that the drivers that are being used do not allow for this.

Zoom Modems and CID. If you are using a Zoom modem and have problems with Caller ID, contact zoom technical support. They have a new driver release that fixes a bug in that made CID fail.

Call Transfer Problems

If you have problems setting up a transfer with IVM, make sure you are able to transfer correctly using an ordinary telephone.

The other possible problem with transfers that use a hook flash, is that different countries and different phone systems can require different flash times. Check your PBX flash time or ask your telephone company (if you are not using a PBX). For professional telephony cards, you can usually set the flash time using the Configure Hardware Box. (Use Settings / Devices / Properties / Configure). For voice modems you can add the Extra Setting S29=X where X is the flash time in ten milli-second. Add the S29=10 setting to the "Extra Settings" for the modem (Settings / Devices / Properties / Configure / Connection / Advanced). Apparently some other modems (including Zoom modems) require +VTD to be set for all of the tones generated, including the flash-hook. Often the default is 100 milli-seconds which isn't long enough for some flash transfers. If you are game you can attempt edit the modem registry settings and change the default to 0.70. The only negative side is that the modem sends ALL tones at this slow rate.

Sometimes it dials too quickly for the PBX, in that case you may need to insert a pause (',') using commas after the flash character ('!') and after the dialed digits.

Using Multiple Voice Modems in one PC

Surely you can use multiple external modems together. We've used 8 modems in one computers. They are rack mounted modems with one power. In fact, it can contain 16 modems. For details please click here

It is possible to install multiple modems on one computer - but you must check with your modem manufacturer that their drivers allow this.

From a customer re Creative Modems: "The folks at DSI / Creative confirmed that they're driver would not support two modems of the same type in one system. I replaced one of the PCI modems with an ISA modem and everything started working fine."

Professional Telephony Cards

Generally speaking, professional telephony cards tend to have much better audio quality and, once they have been correctly installed, work very reliably. But we always believe good modems do also work very well and even do more than voice boards as they can deal both voice, fax, and have speakerphone.

Recommended Telephony Boards

Dialogic Cards (Some Cards Recommended)

For more information about using Dialogic Voice Boards including the full recommended board list and troubleshooting tips see Dialogic Cards.

Most modern Dialogic Cards (including 21H/41H, 2ESC/4ESC, Proline/2V and D/2PCI/4PCI and later models) work well with IVM but you should be aware that some older card models (including 21D or the DIALOG/4) were not fully TAPI compliant.

In our experience, Dialogic cards work best under Windows NT4 / 2000/XP. Installing under 95/98/Me can sometimes cause difficulties.

Installing Dialogic Card Drivers can be a complex process. You need to install (1) the Dialogic Hardware Drivers, (2) the Dialogic TAPI drivers and (3) the Dialogic Wave Drivers. Refer to the documentation provided on the CD-ROM with the cards for more information. Note: It is not enough that the Dialogic Proprietary Software shows that the card is working because these access the hardware directly and do not work through the TAPI or Wave drivers.

If after installation of Dialogic Cards our softwares answers the calls but no sound is played, this means that you have not fully installed the WAVE drivers (or you are using an earlier incompatible Dialogic card eg 21D / DIALOG/4).

If you find recordings are chopped off at the end, try to adjust the end-of-call-tone timer settings.

Dialogic Cards - Where to Purchase

There are many online retailers of Dialogic Voice Boards. Try the link below and search "Dialogic".

CallURL Telephony Cards

A cheaper alternative to Dialogic Voice Cards but with almost identical features is the CallURL TAPI voice boards. CallURL cards can be purchased directly from the manufacturer www.callurl.com

If you purchase the 2LV+ or the 4LV+ models please ask for a copy of up-to-date EasyTAPI v2.3.0N drivers. It has better DTMF detection timing than the previous drivers on the CD-ROM.

Installation instructions for CallURL cards are available here .

Way2Call Hi-Phone Desktop

A very good value option if you need only a single line but want professional quality audio is the Way2Call Hi-Phone desktop. See www.way2call.com for more information.

If you purchase a way2call device, please ask for the most uptodate drivers (the drivers on the CD-ROM are faulty).

STOP PRESS: We have had recent complaints of the Way2Call devices misdetect the end-of-call tone as a call waiting which can cause some problems. Confirm the position with them before ordering.

Brooktrout Telephony Cards

The Brooktrout RDSP/432 with TAPI drivers works well. However Brooktrout have recently issued a press release indicating they will no longer be supporting TAPI telephony devices. For this reason they are not recommended because they might not be well supported in future.

Not Recommended List

The following devices are not recommended:

  • Music Telecom Cards . The most recent drivers have some bugs which have not been fixed. Customers have also complained about poor technical support from that company.

Other Professional Telephony Devices

The SST PCTAN2 and PCTAN4 cards work well with NCH Swift Sound Software.

If you find a telephony device that works which is not listed, or a telephony device which does not work please let us know by email to info@VoiceAngel.com

ISDN, T1 and other Digital Line Devices

For T1 lines we recommend the D/240SC-T1 (see www.nch.com.au/ivm/dialogic.html ).

A number of TAPI devices are available for ISDN lines. It is always preferable to purchase one with direct TAPI support. But if the card only comes with the ISDN CAPI support then you can use a special driver like COMISDN www.comisdn.org .

If you find other digital devices that work well, please let us know by email to info@VoiceAngel.com
